About the job

Klaviyo is looking for an experienced and proactive Corporate Counsel (Product and Marketing) to join our growing legal team and support the company’s product development, marketing initiatives, and compliance efforts across a broad spectrum of digital communications.

Role Overview:

As Corporate Counsel (Product and Marketing) at Klaviyo, you will provide critical legal support for the company's product offerings and marketing activities, with a primary focus on email and SMS marketing, data privacy, and advertising laws. You will work closely with the product, engineering, marketing, and compliance teams to ensure that Klaviyo’s marketing tools and communications comply with evolving legal and regulatory requirements, while supporting the company’s mission of driving customer success through innovative marketing solutions.

This is an exciting opportunity for a skilled attorney to have a direct impact on the legal landscape of marketing technology and guide the business through the complexities of marketing laws, consumer protection, and data privacy regulations.

How You’ll Make a Difference:

  • Legal Support for Product and Marketing: Provide legal counsel to product, engineering, and marketing teams on the development and execution of email, SMS, and other digital marketing features, ensuring compliance with marketing laws (e.g., CAN-SPAM, TCPA) and data privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR, CCPA).
  • Risk Management and Compliance: Identify, assess, and mitigate legal risks related to product features and marketing campaigns. Ensure adherence to consumer protection, advertising, and data handling laws, including ensuring clear consent management for marketing communications.
  • Contract and Policy Oversight: Review, negotiate, and draft contracts related to product development, third-party vendors, and marketing services. Develop internal policies and guidelines to align marketing practices and product features with applicable legal standards.
  • Marketing Campaign Review and Guidance: Advise marketing teams on the legal aspects of email, SMS, other digital campaigns and claims substantiation, ensuring compliance with relevant advertising laws, disclosures, and consumer protections.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with product, marketing, privacy, and compliance teams to ensure legal and regulatory alignment across product offerings, customer communications, and marketing strategies.
  • Training and Advocacy: Conduct training for internal teams on marketing law, product compliance, and data privacy issues. Monitor industry trends, regulatory changes, and best practices to keep Klaviyo’s marketing efforts ahead of emerging legal requirements.

Who You Are:

  • Education: J.D. from an accredited law school and active bar membership in at least one jurisdiction.
  • Experience:

    • 5+ years of legal experience, preferably in-house or at a law firm, with a focus on digital marketing, product counseling, and/or technology law.
    • In-depth understanding of email and SMS marketing laws, including CAN-SPAM, TCPA, the Telephone Consumer Protection Act, and other applicable regulations.
    • Experience with data privacy laws (GDPR, CCPA, etc.) as they relate to marketing practices and customer communications.
    • Strong knowledge of advertising law, consumer protection regulations, and digital marketing compliance issues.
    • Familiarity with SaaS business models and marketing technologies is a plus.
  • Skills:

    • Excellent legal research, writing, and communication skills.
    • Ability to simplify complex legal concepts and communicate them clearly to non-legal stakeholders.
    • Practical knowledge of how marketing teams work and how marketing technology platforms operate.
    • Strong business acumen and the ability to navigate legal risks in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.
  • Preferred:

    • Experience advising on global data privacy issues and cross-border marketing regulations.
    • A background in technology law or intellectual property law is a plus.
