About the job
MongoDB’s mission is to empower innovators to create, transform, and disrupt industries by unleashing the power of software and data. We enable organizations of all sizes to easily build, scale, and run modern applications by helping them modernize legacy workloads, embrace innovation, and unleash AI. Our industry-leading developer data platform, MongoDB Atlas, is the only globally distributed, multi-cloud database and is available in more than 115 regions across AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. Atlas allows customers to build and run applications anywhere—on premises, or across cloud providers. With offices worldwide and over 175,000 new developers signing up to use MongoDB every month, it’s no wonder that leading organizations, like Samsung and Toyota, trust MongoDB to build next-generation, AI-powered applications.
The MongoDB Developer Experience team builds and maintains the rich set of libraries and integrations that serve as the primary developer interfaces to the MongoDB database, maintaining support for more than ten programming languages. We’re a globally distributed team with developers in multiple time zones and continents. Our senior engineers are typically specialists in a particular programming language, but are capable of contributing to projects in other languages as well.
To work with this team, we are looking for a seasoned product manager who has a background in software engineering (ideally, library/API development & management) - someone who would understand the desires of the developer community intimately from the user perspective. Therefore, our ideal candidate has hands-on experience building web applications, is a fast learner, and is comfortable with reading and noticing flaws in technical documentation and technical implementation: You are passionate about working with engineers and understand the software development lifecycle, and are able to crisply communicate what is ideal, what is acceptable, and what won’t work. You have spent time on sites like StackOverflow searching for solutions. You thrive when working independently, and communicate well both in person and to a crowd. You have an insatiable desire to learn and improve yourself, and keeping your technical skills sharp is important to you despite working in a product role.
As the product manager, you will define what the user experience should be for specific programming language communities including Java, Scala and Kotlin. You will identify opportunities and prioritize product backlogs for the client libraries, framework integrations, or partnerships. You will help plan what we build and when, and be a strong partner with engineering leadership. You will maintain context on what’s new and important to developers. You will work with our technical documentation, DevRel, and services teams to ensure a cohesive experience.
Onboarding for this role includes building a working web application in the stack of your choice with MongoDB, writing a tutorial, and publishing it publicly. You will also introduce yourself to various JVM-related language communities (such as Reddit) and submit talks for conferences that are technical in nature, triage issues, and sometimes reply to software engineers on community forums.
The ideal candidate for this role should have
- 2-3 years of product management experience
- 2-3 years of commercial experience developing web applications in Java (the interviews for this position will include a live coding component)
- Deep understanding of the Java language, the JVM, and its ecosystem including Scala, Kotlin, Spring and Hibernate
- Ability to communicate sophisticated technical issues simply and convincingly to a wide range of audiences
- Ability to distill customer use cases and requirements, write comprehensive business cases and execute on them
- Curiosity, a positive attitude, and a drive to continue learning
- Foster an inclusive and respectful work environment according to MongoDB's Core Values
Position Expectations
- Explore the problem space, interact with the users, formulate the vision and maintain the roadmap for your area, keeping it aligned with the company’s strategic priorities
- Deeply understand all aspects of the business — your job is to ensure a business outcome, not just product definition!
- Communicate complex concepts in a manner that is easily understood by multiple audiences
- Define user experiences/scopes and provide necessary advocacy for them to be executed on
- Work closely with the product design and engineering teams to design, architect, implement and ship new capabilities of the database to delight users
- Balance (sometimes conflicting) priorities on a roadmap to benefit users and enable new use cases, maintain a prioritized backlog
- Advocate for our users with passion about operational performance, predictability, and security
- Collect and analyze data that will drive product decisions
- Work with thought leaders from the respective language communities, establish credibility, and weigh in discussions
- Keep your pulse on software engineering trends across language communities and advocate for new languages, frameworks etc to be added to our portfolio
- Be comfortable troubleshooting bugs, triaging technical issues and review technical designs
- Perform various go to market activities such as collaborating on a marketing campaign, running a survey, or producing sales messaging
- Collaborate with peers in product management, engineering & other disciplines to ensure alignment and common success
Success Measures
- In three months, you will have onboarded on the current MongoDB technologies & tools, and built an application with Java or Kotlin and MongoDB, putting it in public on Github; successfully triaged new issues with the engineering team, taken ownership of the existing roadmap and the product backlog; got to know the team (this team is globally distributed) and started building relationships inside the company
- In six months, you will have reviewed / refined existing user stories and JIRA issues, prioritized and started executing on them with your engineering team; you will have also researched new and existing markets, identified some new trends and started their exploration in a methodical way
- In nine months, you have produced at least two GA releases of tier 1 drivers, several service releases, delighted users with new/improved experiences (you’ll need to define your metrics to measure customer success with your deliverables as well), identified new opportunities & refined your roadmap, contributed to other projects, presented to customers, user groups, and conferences, and gained strong support of your team and other stakeholders
