About the job
Teamwork makes the stream work.
Roku is changing how the world watches TV
Roku is the #1 TV streaming platform in the US and Mexico, and we've set our sights on powering every television in the world. Roku pioneered streaming to the TV. Our mission is to be the TV streaming platform that connects the entire TV ecosystem. We connect consumers to the content they love, enable content publishers to build and monetize large audiences, and provide advertisers unique capabilities to engage consumers.
From your first day at Roku, you'll make a valuable - and valued - contribution. We're a fast-growing public company where no one is a bystander. We offer you the opportunity to delight millions of TV streamers around the world while gaining meaningful experience across a variety of disciplines.
About the Team
The Advanced Development team pushes the boundaries beyond product lines to build genuinely new things. We think independent of standard shipping cadences and timelines, working on foundational technologies that could impact every Roku device in the future and on ideas that no one’s seen in their living room. Yet.
Because this is an exceptional team, we are seeking exceptional talent. Everyone here is an expert but without the myopia of over-specialization. They have the technical expertise to let them see the bigger picture but can still go deep into the minutia, pushing back against convention and building something singular and new. They foster a strong sense of collaboration and trust with little room for drama. Together, this is a team of people who love to make decisions and own those decisions.
About The Role
With over 70 million global users, Roku is renowned for creating products that “just work” seamlessly, delivering an intuitive, almost magical experience right out of the box. This success is no accident—it stems from our dedication to cutting-edge technology and engineering, all centered around enhancing the customer experience. We are now seeking a skilled Sr. DevOps Engineer to join the Advance Development Team. This team is pivotal in building and scaling our platform, utilizing technologies such as Kubernetes, Istio, Envoy, and other OSS/CNCF-supported tools. You will be crucial in driving Roku’s transition to a unified, cloud-agnostic system, maintaining and enhancing our service mesh architecture, observability platform, and CI tooling.
We’re looking for engineers who thrive in collaborative environments, enjoy working across teams, and are passionate about automation, security, and data-driven metrics like SLOs and SLAs. If you're well-versed in Kubernetes, the CNCF ecosystem, and love optimizing workloads and simplifying debugging for teams, this role is ideal for you. Join us and help shape the next generation of Roku’s infrastructure!
What you'll be doing
- Work on AWS ECS, Kubernetes & Service Mesh to manage our growing fleet of clusters globally
- Identify key feature gaps, bugs, scalability issues, and other challenges when working with internal customers.
- Collaborate with the internal team, stakeholders, and partners to implement effective solutions.
- Provide daily support to customers as they onboard and use our platforms, helping them optimize value, performance, and reliability for their workloads.
- Contribute to enhancing our platforms' capabilities, prioritizing reliability and scalability.
- Conduct feature, functionality, and usability trials for new tools that could benefit Roku.
- Exhibit strong communication skills and maintain a support-oriented approach when interacting with both technical and non-technical audiences.
We're excited if you have
- Extensive experience years in Infrastructure engineering, DevOps and/or Software Engineering, with a focused towards cross-team engagement.
- Familiarity with ECS, Kubernetes and Istio as the architecture on which the platform runs, and how they integrate and scale.
- Expertise in using open-source observability tools in large scale environments, including (but not limited to) Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana, ELK (ElasticSearch + Logstash + Kibana), Jaeger, Kiali, and/or Loki.
- Past success in supporting a large, talented engineering team in utilizing a central common platform. Patience, a friendly, helpful approach, and constructive communication are key traits. You must be a "people person" to succeed.
- The drive and self-motivation to understand the intricate details of a complex infrastructure environment.
- Independently driven in a highly distributed, multi-national team spread across numerous time zones.
- Hands on experience working with AWS and/or GCP.
- Experience with a high-level scripting or infra language (such as Terraform, Helm, Shell, and/or Python) and being part of on call rotations.

The Roku Culture
Roku is a great place for people who want to work in a fast-paced environment where everyone is focused on the company's success rather than their own. We try to surround ourselves with people who are great at their jobs, who are easy to work with, and who keep their egos in check. We appreciate a sense of humor. We believe a fewer number of very talented folks can do more for less cost than a larger number of less talented teams. We're independent thinkers with big ideas who act boldly, move fast and accomplish extraordinary things through collaboration and trust. In short, at Roku you'll be part of a company that's changing how the world watches TV.
We have a unique culture that we are proud of. We think of ourselves primarily as problem-solvers, which itself is a two-part idea. We come up with the solution, but the solution isn't real until it is built and delivered to the customer. That penchant for action gives us a pragmatic approach to innovation, one that has served us well since 2002.
