Role Overview
The Director of Retail Systems is a high impact leadership role influencing Coupang’s customers and suppliers. In this role you will shape and develop systems and platforms that enable Coupang’s customers find and buy products they desire at the market’s lowest price and quickest & most convenient delivery. You will partner with retail business leaders and shape the selection sourcing, onboarding and supplier engagement strategy in a data led and efficient manner; lead supplier platforms and internal sourcing planning and management tools that help us grow Coupang retail and online e-commerce while helping our supplier’s scale and grow further.
You will closely with operation and business counterparts to enhance our selection sourcing and onboarding capabilities and impact; work closely with retail business and cross functional teams in developing sourcing intelligence platforms and tools that help retail sourcing teams quickly and efficiently reach, engage, negotiate, and source high demand products from right brands and suppliers; own the strategy and development of membership / loyalty systems that offer long term incentives to ensure we offer great selection to our customers and help our suppliers grow and drive product initiatives and teams that will develop critical capabilities to expand selection in new categories and new markets.
This is a high-profile role that owns the communication, coordination, and execution of full-lifecycle programs and selection platforms and tools development. You will collaborate and influence cross-functional leadership across Coupang including Retail Business, Engineering, Operations, Finance, Legal, and more. We are at the early stages of realizing the enormous potential in productizing selection sourcing. Our vision is to offer a great selection and delightful shopping experience for customers by building the world’s best sourcing and onboarding system and tools for our teams and supply partners. The Director of Retail Systems will help bring innovative solutions that strengthen the retail growth and systematically improve supplier performance. The successful candidate will be a visionary product leader that inspires the team to envision new applications, and a disciplined operator that can take bold ideas to market.
What You Will Do
- Drive the product strategy, vision, and roadmap to expand retail selection strategically and build new / strengthen existing partnerships with high demand product brands and suppliers.
- Empower Teams: Inspire and lead product management and cross-functional teams, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
- Data-Driven Decisioning: Leverage data analytics to make informed decisions, identify trends, and proactively address optimizations to ensure we are keeping up with customer demand in terms of selection coverage.
- Champion Automation: Drive and support automation initiatives to minimize manual errors, increase efficiency, and support training data development via manual operations for various ML and automation initiatives within retail stream.
- Own Financial Planning: Manage planning and forecasts to get and manage resource funding for retail systems product, tech and operations streams.
- Drive Scalability and Growth: Develop scalable systems and tools and establish operational playbooks, performance measurement systems, feedback loops and ad-ons to enable continuous improvement.
- Oversee product roadmaps and assign priorities based on strategic alignment, maximum business impact, and ROI
- Manage all steps of the product lifecycle, including use case and problem statement definition, success and guardrail metrics, solution discovery, strategic development, launch, and impact analysis.
- Train up-and-coming product managers by aligning their professional interests with the team’s overall program goals and strategies. Assist and guide them in carrying out crucial tasks or resolving blockers that arise during the product development lifecycle.
- Establish strong working relationships with various stakeholders to deliver accurate, timely product features to continuously improve and achieve against program goals.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in business, economics, math, finance, engineering or similar fields.
- 10+ years of product management experience building/launching large-scale e-commerce tech products/services with at least 5-years in large scale enterprise systems.
- Experience in e-commerce procurement and sourcing space is a plus.
- 5+ years as a people manager at scale including individual contributors and manager roles – able to inspire, coach, develop, and grow geographically dispersed, high-performing cross-functional teams to deliver products and projects on tight deadlines.
- Proven analytical and quantitative skills; ability to use hard data and metrics to back up assumptions and develop product business cases.
- Demonstrated ability to understand and discuss technical concepts, manage tradeoffs, and evaluate opportunistic new ideas with internal and external partners.
Preferred Qualifications
- MBA or Masters degree in a quantitative field (Business, engineering, statistics) preferred.
- Startup experience with an ability to deal with ambiguity in a fast-paced environment and changing priorities is highly valued
- Previous e-commerce or pricing domain experience
- Experience working in international environments and globally distributed teams
- Fluency in both Mandarin and Korean preferred, but not required.
