We are seeking a Data Engineer to join our fast-growing fintech startup focused on transforming the institutional investment management space. This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated engineer to help build and scale our data architecture, ETL pipelines, and databases from the ground up. Working with leading-edge technologies like Snowflake and MySQL, the candidate will contribute to innovative data solutions powering decision-making processes across large investment firms.
In this role, you’ll gain hands-on experience in core financial functions, including portfolio management, performance reporting, compliance, and risk analytics. Our lean, collaborative environment will allow you to learn directly from subject-matter experts and take ownership of critical data initiatives that drive real business value.
Key Responsibilities:
Data Architecture & Design:
Design and implement scalable, efficient data architectures to support both operational and analytical workflows.
Develop data models that align with the unique needs of the investment management industry (e.g., securities data, portfolios, transactions).
Database Design & Development:
Build, optimize, and manage relational databases with a primary focus on MySQL and Snowflake.
Ensure database performance, scalability, and security to meet the growing data needs of institutional clients.
SQL Development & Optimization:
Write complex SQL queries for data extraction, transformation, and financial reporting.
Ensure the performance of large, multi-dimensional datasets with optimization best practices.
ETL/ELT Pipeline Development:
Design, build, and maintain ETL/ELT pipelines to integrate data from internal and external financial sources.
Use tools like Airflow, Fivetran, or custom solutions to automate data ingestion and transformations.
Data Warehousing & Analytics:
Build and maintain data warehouses and marts optimized for financial analytics.
Develop Star and Snowflake schemas for efficient querying and storage of investment-related data.
Collaboration & Documentation:
Work closely with portfolio managers, data scientists, compliance teams, and other stakeholders to gather requirements and deliver robust data solutions.
Document data models, pipelines, and processes to ensure alignment across teams and knowledge continuity.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
6+ years of experience as a Data Engineer or in a similar role, preferably in fintech or finance-related environments.
Strong knowledge of data architecture and database design principles.
Expertise in SQL development with a focus on performance tuning and optimization.
Hands-on experience with MySQL and Snowflake (setup, query performance tuning, and administration).
Experience building ETL/ELT pipelines using tools such as Airflow, Talend, Prefect or Fivetran.
Understanding of data warehousing concepts and experience implementing dimensional models (Star/Snowflake schemas).
Ability to manage large datasets and ensure data quality and governance.
Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and data integration with cloud services.
Strong problem-solving abilities and the ability to work independently in a startup environment with minimal supervision.
Preferred Skills (Nice to Have):
Familiarity with investment management functions like portfolio analysis, compliance reporting, or performance attribution.
Experience working with Python or Scala for data processing.
Exposure to big data technologies (Hadoop, Spark) or data lakes.
Familiarity with dbt (data build tool) for data transformation workflows.
Knowledge of CI/CD practices for data pipelines.
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field.
Certifications in Snowflake, SQL databases, or cloud technologies are a plus.
What We Offer:
A chance to work in a high-growth startup environment in the institutional fintech space.
Deep exposure to the inner workings of large investment management firms, including portfolio management, risk analysis, and performance reporting.
Ownership of impactful projects that directly influence business outcomes.
Competitive salary and benefits package.
Opportunities for career growth and hands-on learning with subject-matter experts in both technology and finance.
