A key pillar of our work focuses on predictive modelling to improve the early detection, surveillance and management of pest and disease outbreaks impacting crops that currently cause an estimated 30% of yield loss globally.

*About the role *

FSID is looking for a Full Stack Product Engineer to join our team.

Build out the MVP of our plant disease decision support tool, and to maintain the infrastructure used to run our epidemic models. As a product engineer, you will input significantly to the product roadmap and design decisions, as well as shipping high-quality code. As a product engineer you will work with our partners to gather requirements and translate these to features which will support decision makers (NGOs / governments / private sector) to make improved decisions around surveillance and management of outbreaks. You will also input significantly into the product roadmap and make design decisions based on the requirements you have gathered.

From a technical perspective, you will take the lead on the development of of the MVP of our decision support tool, shipping to production with a pragmatic approach. Most of our code is currently written in Typescript - we use Supabase as our backend and SvelteKit for the frontend - but at its early stages we can discuss changes to the tech stack.
In addition to developing the decision support tool, you will support the development and maintenance of infrastructure code to run epidemic models on cloud-based HPC and maintain our data pipelines.

About you

Given the varied nature of the role, we are looking for a talented generalist engineer who also cares deeply about product and end-users. We are looking for:

• 5+ years of experience building software (both front and back end).
• Experience taking a product from conception to implementation. You are not daunted by a blank IDE and can work reliably and autonomously to bring a product to life.
• A strong understanding of the full SDLC.
• Experience in database design (both relational and no-SQL).
• Someone with a passion for building and delivering products.
• A pragmatic engineer who uses the right tools for the job.
• Someone who is excited by influencing the product roadmap and design.
• Someone who is not afraid to turn their hand to unfamiliar tasks.
• You are empathetic and keep users front of mind when making decisions.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead software development at FSID.
• Collaborate with NGOs, governments, and private sector stakeholders to translate their needs into actionable product requirements.
• Work with a small interdisciplinary team, including mathematical modellers, epidemiologists, to ensure seamless integration of models into industry-grade user-centric software tools that leverage models for near real-time outbreak monitoring and management.
• Communicate effectively with non-technical stakeholders.
