About the RoleYou will be a critical team member in Lyra’s growing legal and compliance team to support internal and external stakeholders in fulfilling Lyra’s mission to bring mental and emotional health solutions to large employers in the US and internationally. This is a full-time remote role that will be located in the UK and will report to Lyra’s Director, Labor and Employment Counsel.
You will be a critical team member in Lyra’s legal team assisting the International People Team, and working cross-functionally throughout the organization, in the management and handling of labor and employment related matters, with particular focus in EMEA and Asia-Pacific regions. This role will work closely with other departments within the company to advise on a wide range of employment issues impacting multiple functions of our team across multiple jurisdictions. You will be expected to work independently as the primary point of contact for the legal team in responding to international labor and employment questions, helping to develop the strategy for our international employment questions, and leading employment-related projects to support Lyra’s growth.
The ideal candidate will be an experienced labor and employment attorney, ready to roll up their sleeves on novel questions of International labor and employment law, able to deliver practical advice to our operational and People teams on international regulations in employment and labor law, and prepared to support teams across multiple time zones. You should have a proactive nature in identifying issues and presenting solutions and be someone who is searching for a collaborative environment brimming with novel questions.
Responsibilities
- Provide in-house legal counsel on employment related matters, which may include, but not be limited to, employment agreements, handbooks, and policy related issues, workplace investigations and Employee Relations matters, manager and employee training, leaves of absence and/or reasonable accommodations, incentive compensation, wage and hour law, worker classification, unemployment and other state agency claims, employee benefits, employment related pre-litigation and litigation matters including administrative charges, background checks, hiring matters, termination matters, separation agreements, and generally assist the Director, Labor & Employment Counsel and International People Team functions
- Works closely with the Employee Relations and HR Business Partners functions to support issues that may arise
- Ensures compliance with all applicable employment laws, regulations and policies
- Participates in and influences the decision-making process with appropriate clients and stakeholders
- Identifies and assesses legal risks and opportunities within the employment area and advises accordingly
- Independently handles legal matters and projects ranging from basic to complex
- Provide practical and solution focused legal advice and support on business matters in a fast-paced environment
- Recognizes when to elevate certain matters to the attention of the General Counsel or Sr. Associate General Counsel
- Supervises, manages and evaluates outside counsel on employment related matters, including litigation
- Educates and trains internal stakeholders on legal matters, policies and procedures
- Establishes and maintains relationships, credibility and trust with clients, stakeholders, legal team members and other colleagues
- Performs other tasks as assigned from time to time by the General Counsel, Sr. Associate General Counsel or Senior Counsel
- Maintain awareness of emerging laws, regulations, enforcement activity, and trends and developments in industry best practices related to labor and employment protection globally
Qualifications
- 7+ years of privacy compliance experience in-house or experienced practice privacy at a law firm
- Strongly preferred qualified and practicing solicitor in England and Wales. Legal qualifications in at least one Member state of the European Union will be considered. Minimum 7 years PQE
- Experience in providing employment-related guidance throughout EMEA and Asia-Pacific regions, also preferred
- In-depth knowledge of privacy and data protection laws, including GDPR, UK GDPR, and other jurisdiction specific privacy laws (e.g., PIPEDA, PIPL, POPI, etc). Knowledge of HIPAA and/or US state privacy laws is a plus
Skillset
- Demonstrated operational experience translating legal requirements into a comprehensive day-to-day employment advice for human resource professionals
- Experience leading appropriate responses to employee relations incidents, including workplace investigation best practices
- Experience analyzing and advising on labor and employment issues across other global territories, including but not limited to EMEA, Latin America and Asia-Pacific preferred
- Excellent problem-solving capabilities, judgment, communication (written and verbal), and interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated experience leading projects, including collecting, distilling and summarizing issues from relevant stakeholders in a timely, clear, and business-friendly manner, and moving projects forward
- Experience working in-house with a technology company and/or health care organization strongly preferred
- Willing and eager to learn new areas of law and function independently in a demanding fast-paced environment
- Demonstrated experience thinking quickly on your feet, conveying grace under pressure, and simultaneously managing workloads, multiple client demands and shifting priorities
- Self-driven, ability to operate autonomously with a communicative personality, proactively reaching out to others as relevant while bringing a positive attitude to the workplace
- Experience presenting to and working with senior leadership and/or external regulators
- Sense of humor
- Ability to confidently work remotely with suitable infrastructure in place
