We are seeking a visionary Lead Electrical Engineer to spearhead development of Opto's cutting-edge neural platform. In this pivotal role, you will drive the definition, specification, and demonstration of key components within our implantable system.

Reporting Structure:
Direct report to the VP of Engineering.

Key Responsibilities:

  • System Architecture:
    • Define and specify major components of the Opto system, including wireless power and communication, IC design constraints, algorithm concepts, and hardware design.
    • Conduct experiments and build prototypes to address fundamental questions related to Opto's core technology.
  • Prototyping and Validation:
    • Lead rapid prototyping efforts for embedded systems, leveraging expertise in FPGAs, microcontrollers, scripting, PCB design, and IC architecture.
    • Build and validate functional prototypes for wireless power and communication links.
  • Technical Leadership:
    • Define wireless power & communication specifications and protocols.
    • Establish high-level IC specifications, incorporating all aspects of wireless power and communication.
    • Spearhead medical device PCB and sub-assembly design from concept to scalable manufacture.
    • Contribute to embedded programming for hardware testing.
    • Translate PCBA prototypes into form factor designs with DFM considerations.
  • Cross-functional Leadership & Collaboration:
    • Lead SW, machine learning, IC design, and EE teams to drive development of Opto's neural platform.
    • Collaborate with mechanical, manufacturing, and pre-clinical teams to ensure seamless integration of all system components.
    • Coordinate cross-functional efforts to align technical development with user needs and manufacturing requirements.
  • Strategic Planning:
    • Assist in the development of the product pipeline.
    • Ensure parallel integration throughout the product development cycle by coordinating with other engineering leads.

Qualifications/Key Skills:

  • BS in Electrical Engineering or related field
  • Industry experience of 7+ years in Hardware/Systems/Electrical Engineering
  • Led or played a key role in designing, building, and testing wireless hardware products from concept to manufacture within the medical device field
  • Ability to differentiate and determine optimal wireless systems based on different architectures.
  • Deep knowledge of circuit design and system integration of wireless systems.
  • Experience with PCB design, layout, and assembly.
  • Knowledge of EU/US active medical device regulations.
  • Experience with circuit and EM simulation tools.
  • Strong communication and organisational skills to work collaboratively within a close team setting.
  • Good firmware/embedded engineering skills and a working knowledge of necessary programming languages and version controls.
  • Experience working with external consultants, manufacturers, or suppliers.

Bonus Skills:

  • Advanced degree preferred
  • Experience in IC/ASIC design
  • Knowledge of low power electronics design
