The SPLC is seeking a Deputy Director to join our Alabama State Office!


The Deputy Director will lead the Alabama State Office’s organizing and capacity building efforts in Alabama. The Deputy Director will continue building a comprehensive and integrated community organizing model throughout the state of Alabama. The Deputy Director will establish systems and strategies to support the state office and to further SPLC’s mission.

Who You Are

Experienced. Demonstrated experience in social justice and civil rights work with the Alabama racial movement ecosystem, understanding the issues impacting Black and Brown communities and a commitment to racial, social and economic justice, specifically in rural Alabama. Proven supervisory experience of leading, training and developing teams.

Manager. Supervise program staff, ensuring success in meeting annual workplan goals. Ability to hire, train, establish and monitor staff performance and development, and conduct performance reviews.

Project Manager. Proven experience managing complex projects and campaigns in a flexible matrixed organizational model. Able to oversee systems, processes, and structures that will monitor and promote the alignment of the state office broader strategic priorities, and lead to more effective working partnerships internally and externally.

Advocate. Demonstrated experience in field organizing and management experience with increasing responsibilities that include, working with community organizations, grassroots campaigns and coalitions, and impacted communities; particularly throughout the Black Belt in Alabama.

Communicative. Exceptional communication skills and ability to communicate to various audiences through writing and speaking.

Innovative and Strategic. Ability to develop strategies to build power and mobilize community members around identified priorities in Alabama, specifically rural communities.

Collaborative. Demonstrated ability to work with internal departments, external organizations, and stakeholders to execute specific strategies to advance the work of the Alabama State Office.

Flexible. Ability to work and travel as needed.

What You'll Do

Manage a team of State Organizers while providing mentoring and coaching to support the mission of SPLC.

Support the Alabama State office campaigns and public education as directed by the Alabama State Director.

Develop relationships and partnerships with local community members, allies, and execute a strategy to ensure SPLC has a presence in Alabama, with priority in rural communities.

Coordinate teams to successfully advance team goals and establish effective collaborative systems and relationships.

Build lateral relationships internally to foster effective cross-team collaboration.

Develop and execute a strategic organizing plan that elevates eradicating poverty as an intersectional issue statewide in Alabama that impacts everyone.

Develop and track budgets for field and outreach programs. Manage vendor and coalition relationships.

Track progress goals for the team and ensure that all organizing plans are strategically aligned with approved tactics and organizational impact goals.

Hire, train, and monitor staff performance and development, and conduct performance reviews.

Perform other duties as required or assigned which are within the scope of the duties in this job classification.

Minimum Qualifications

We are committed to equitable hiring practices, therefore you must meet the minimum qualifications to be considered for the role.

  • Minimum seven years of experience in field organizing;
  • Minimum five years of supervisory experience; and
  • High school diploma or GED.

Compensation & Benefits

This is an exempt role and the minimum starting salary is $148,500.00 annually. Salary is commensurate with experience.

Where & How You'll Work

This role the following work designations options:

Remote Local: Will work remotely but is expected to attend work related activities that occur at the SPLC offices or in the states in which the SPLC operates.

Telework: Will work at an SPLC office at least three days per week and may work two days per week from an alternative work location.

This position reports to the Alabama State Director.

Other Special Considerations

This job is performed under general office conditions and is not subject to any strenuous physical demands or dangerous conditions.

The Deputy Director will work statewide, but will primarily focus on the Southern region of the State.

Will work remotely but is expected to attend work related activities that occur at the SPLC offices or in the states in which the SPLC operates.

Ability to work some evenings and weekends.
