About the job

What is Streamline?

We’re a 9 person startup on a mission to accelerate the climate transition. We use software to reduce the time it takes companies to find and apply for funding by up to 80%. Our product has an immediate real-world impact on our customers and the world, and we’re uniquely poised to help the worlds most innovative climate tech companies raise the capital they need to shape our future.

Deep-tech startups typically raise dollar-to-dollar in grants as they do from venture capital (ie, a lot). Grants are non-dilutive and a great way to extend runway, but, they take critical time away from running a business. Long grants take weeks of work, where several key leaders are pulled away from typical operations to crank out dozens of pages of boilerplate applications. All of this can be streamlined.

Who are we… and how did we get here?

I (Helena) formerly built and sold a YC-backed video chat startup, and my co-founder Doug (CTO) led technical teams at a cloud data security company. We met early in 2022 via a Figma file while mapping out systemic causes of climate change. The goal was to identify bottlenecks hindering the deployment climate solutions. We realized the fastest and most direct way of making an impact would be to streamline time-consuming workflows. This became increasingly obvious with the passing of new policy — namely the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), CHIPS, and IIJA. We are venture backed by amazing funds like Pear VC and Thirdsphere.

What is the role?

As a founding engineer you will wear many hats on the engineering and non-engineering front. You’ll help shape our story. You’ll be joining as the 7th team member and will be much more than an engineer.

  • Autonomy. Decide what your top priorities are and own their execution end-to-end.

  • Join customer calls to get first-hand feedback on your work, and grow into an empathetic, thick-skinned listener.

  • Scope, plan, and own the full stack implementation of trajectory-changing features and verticals, balancing execution pace with code quality.

  • Work alongside the whole team to execute, validate and iterate quickly on proof-of-concepts.

  • Delete lots of code. Fail quickly, document your learning, clean up after yourself, and keep moving.

  • You don’t need a background in science, climate, or AI to succeed in this role. If you’re a strong engineer, you can likely pick up our stack in a matter of days.

Qualities we look for

  • You are a product-minded software engineer. Our engineers blur the line with product and design, and work closely with technical and non-technical staff.

  • You take a human-centric approach to building. We’re obsessed with our partners (customers), spending a lot of time on calls getting product feedback.

  • You feel energized by user feedback (even if its negative) and you can read between the lines to ensure that the team builds a car, even if the users are asking for a faster horse.

  • You operate with a high level of ownership over the outcomes of your work, and you expect the same from your team.

  • You want to be the change you seek in climate. You recognize that the future is in your hands, and you want to influence the future of this planet.

Interview Process

During the interview process, we’ll ask questions that help us understand your motives, dreams, and passions— and encourage you to do the same to us. Deciding to join a team this early can be a huge leap and one we want to mutually feel ecstatic about. We’re excited to hear about what drives and motivates you to tackle climate change.

Here’s the format we plan to follow:

  • Screening Call with Helena (CEO)

  • Technical Screening Call with Doug (CTO)

  • Technical architecture jam with Doug (CTO)

  • Technical design challenge (full-stack) - (1 week, self-paced)

  • Trial period ~1-3 weeks (flexible on this)
