About the job

OpenClass is seeking a Chief Curriculum Officer to lead our content and curriculum initiatives. This includes...

  • Owning the life-cycle for content development requests: You will need to work with the client to understand their needs, find a high-quality and reliable Subject Matter Expert (SME), and work with the SME to build out engaging learning content.
  • Leading our internal content development initiatives: This may include strategizing on what types of learning content we should develop in-house, helping to form strategic partnerships to aid our growth, and owning the content development process.
  • Curating and developing internal content: As an early-stage startup, we need to be as resourceful as possible. It is an added bonus if you love to teach and can help build out some internal content for us.
  • Working with instructors to help ensure quality standards: This may include corresponding with instructors via email and/or leading Zoom workshops to help instructors on our platform understand best practices.

The ideal candidate is...

  • Passionate about education: Early hires at a startup shape the future culture of the company. We want people who are intrinsically motivated to fix problems in education and excited to work on solutions to these problems everyday.
  • Startup-minded: We have a small (but driven) team and are constantly facing new problems. We need people who not only can move quickly, but enjoy and thrive working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Creative and independent: Much of our workflow involves discussing big-picture objectives, collaboratively strategizing on best paths to accomplish the objectives, then getting to work on them. We don't want to hire executives to tell them what to do; rather, we want to hire people who bring unique skills and perspectives to the table that will help lead the direction of the company.
  • Well-organized and an effective communicator: This role entails managing the development of multiple projects at once, where each may have multiple stakeholders involved that should be kept in the loop at each step along the way.
  • A teacher: In addition to a general passion for education, we want this role to be filled by someone specifically passionate about teaching and helping people learn. A teacher will have a keen eye for what makes an effective learning experience, allowing them to effectively filter SMEs, guide SMEs in developing content, curate high-quality content, and communicate with other educators.
  • A believer in open education: This role will likely include a large emphasis on expanding our open content initiatives. If making the best educational resources available to anyone with access to the internet is something that drives you, you may just be a great fit!
  • Experienced in working with SMEs, curating content, and/or developing online learning content: Any experience in developing online learning experiences, whether as the SME or working with other SMEs, is a huge bonus.

If this sounds like you, please email a resume and/or brief overview of why this position interests you to our founder Alec Kretch at [email protected]. Thank you!

About OpenClass

OpenClass is a learning tool for educators to build mastery-based assignments to reinforce learning in their classes. We work with a variety of class types, from in-person university classes to online coding bootcamp classes. Our mission is to improve and democratize education, and long-term, we believe that anywhere that people learn new information, there could be an opportunity for OpenClass to improve that learning experience.

The fundamental problem that OpenClass tries to solve is the glove or one-size-fits-all problem in education. Why do hundreds of millions of students around the world attend classes, try their best to learn, but quickly forget most of what their teacher discussed? Well, it can be nearly impossible for one instructor to reach the unique needs and preferences of each student in their class... We believe technology can significantly help bridge this gap. And we work every day to try to fix this problem.

The bottom line is that education is a massive time and financial investment that is nowhere near as efficient as it should be. Let's fix the system!
