The Zoological Society of London (ZSL), a charity founded in 1826, is a world-renowned centre of excellence for conservation science and applied conservation. ZSL’s purpose is to inspire, inform and empower people to stop wild animals from going extinct. With a new strategy about to launch in June 2018, ZSL is just about to embark on a transformational change programme which will see strategic objectives being set for our 200 year anniversary in 2026. With global biodiversity in rapid decline and a growing number of species on the brink of extinction, advances in technology are becoming ever more important in helping us to solve these conservation challenges. ZSL is working with a range of expert partners (e.g. Google) to design, develop, manufacture and deploy innovative and integrated technological tools that will revolutionise wildlife surveillance, biodiversity monitoring and behaviour change through digital communications. ZSL is one of the leading conservation organisations pushing innovation in this field. The team were the first to deliver a real-time satellite enable anti-poaching alarm system, (Instant Detect) an open source animal tracker (Mataki) and software to engage the public to analyse camera trap data (Instant Wild), alongside innovative public engagement platforms such as the #wearetherangers Minecraft experience.
