The transition to renewable energy will accelerate the search and identification for regional generation sites with optimal resource and connection conditions. While acknowledging the work underway by Australia’s energy regulators to examine rules and policies required to govern the NEM from 2025, appropriately scaled regional generation that supplies local industry or community demand is an essential current and future requirement of Australia’s energy market, but the time frame to identify and develop the best opportunities is limited. We have developed the regional concept, having found that areas serviced by long transmission distances and intermittent generation will benefit from distributed energy storage systems and microgrids with storage. In these regions, Zephyr aims to create Virtual Power Plants and microgrids in combination with appropriately scaled localised generation and storage. These projects are the first of their kind in Australia. To secure our 1GW objective, 15 prospective sites have been identified, which on initial assessment, offer igh reliability but relatively low execution risk, in sites across Eastern Australia, including Tasmania. We currently have 5 projects which have met initial feasibility requirements with 580MW planned and a urther 640(+/-) MW in projects with preliminary research in progress and prospective sites.
