Xander is a Boston-based startup using AR to improve interpersonal communication and mitigate the debilitating effects of hearing loss. Our first product is XanderGlasses—smart glasses that provide captions for conversations in real-time. When ambient noise or hearing loss prevents a person from hearing and understanding speech, the glasses display captions to the wearer in real-time, enabling the wearer to look at the people speaking and participate fully in the conversation. Xander is positioned to help the 1.5 billion people with hearing loss who seek alternatives to hearing aids and other assistive devices. After wearing XanderGlasses, people reported feeling more confident and relaxed during conversations and described a decrease in cognitive load and improved mental state.

Xander’s founding team has deep experience in audio technology from industry leaders like the MIT Media Lab, Gibson, Mitsubishi Research Labs, and iZotope. In October 2022, Xander earned a Catalyst Award from the National Academy of Medicine and won the CTA Foundation Eureka Park Accessibility Contest. The team is now preparing to pilot prototypes with the Veteran’s Health Administration in 4 sites across the U.S.
