Status quo: The second item of expenditure after the tuition fee for those attending university is related to textbooks cost. By attending Economics and Statistics in Turin, if we decided to buy all the exam textbooks over the course of the three-year career, the costs would amount to € 710.93, € 32.32 on average per book. By interviewing students from different degree courses, it emerged that students enrolled in the first year of university purchase new textbooks, of which they tend to consult a few chapters when they are close to the exam session. After first year, as the total cost of books weighs heavily on savings, students decide not to buy new textbooks and to obtain teaching materials through alternative solutions. At the same time as the need to save money, students set themselves the goal of easily passing their exams. As a consequence, they usually get didactic material that can be easily found by relying on second-hand textbooks, scripts and slides provided by the professors. The students also turn to the copy shops which, infringing all copyright laws, sell photocopied textbooks. What about publishers? As far as publishers are concerned, it is estimated about 41% revenue loss is paid out of second-hand books! Publishers live a phase of research and experimentation at full capacity to renew the production and marketing of textbooks. In addition to playing the role of complementary distribution channel to the classic bookstores and e-commerce, Usophy takes on the function of laboratory for 'ebook product' for publishers. The mission converges in shaping together the new textbooks suited to the needs of current and future generations of students.
