Netflix meets Masterclass for creative education.
tonebase is an online education platform – best described as a hybrid of Netflix and Masterclass for creative education – which has launched in the two verticals of classical piano and guitar. Our product is a platform hosting hundreds of high-quality video tutorials with some of the best instructors in the world. Many of them are GRAMMY award winners, professors at elite institutions like Yale and Juilliard, as well as up-and-coming stars in their respective fields.
By combining outstanding content with an innovative platform specifically tailored to music education, we are working on providing an exceptional learning experience for our customers, while democratizing the knowledge of brightest creative minds that were so far only accessible to a lucky few.
tonebase was founded in 2017. The three founders – Igor, Chris, and Abhi – met while studying at Yale. Chris and Igor, both classical guitarists and life-long musicians, always felt frustrated by the difficulty of accessing really high-level educators both as kids growing up, but also as aspiring professionals later in college and decided to do something about it while at Yale. After going through a number of failed attempts at building an initial MVP, they decided to get real and brought on Abhi as the technical co-founder to round out the founding team.
Fast forward a few years later and a bit of MRR to prove some traction, the three founders went through the LAUNCH accelerator in the winter of 2018 and raised a successful Seed Round in San Francisco in Q1 2019. Since then the company -- originally based out of sunny Los Angeles, but now spread out all over the world -- grew to 15 FTE, launched a new musical vertical (piano), and is expanding quickly to execute on our ambitious mission to connect the world's greatest creatives with passionate learners in as many disciplines as possible.
