State of Place careers
State of Place's AI-driven, predictive analytics software helps citymakers make more effective, cost-efficient, and inclusive urban design and planning decisions, to create livable, sustainable, and equitable places, which maximize the social, health, fiscal, and environmental value of communities.
Specifically, the State of Place platform automatically extracts data on over 150 micro-scale built environment features (e.g., sidewalks, benches, trees) from digital street-level imagery using visual machine learning models. Our algorithms then convert that data into an index that measures walkability and quality of place - essentially quantifying what people love about places - which is broken down into ten sub-indices that measure aspects of urban design, such as pedestrian amenities, proximity to destinations, and traffic safety, which helps communities identify their built environment assets and needs. Our predictive analytics then generate urban design priorities and built environment recommendations most likely to optimize various social, economic, environmental, and health outcomes, and our Sim-City like scenario tool allows both citymakers and communities to test various design changes and model out both how that might impact the Index, but also quantify the quadruple bottom line value and return on investment of proposed changes. To date, this evidence-based, data-driven approach to making citymaking decisions has helped over 40 cities and developers worldwide create the kinds of places people want - and deserve - by ensuring limited resources are used in ways that maximize "the bang for the buck" and streamlining the communication process and get the funding, approvals, and buy-in needed to deliver these places.
