Flurry is a new mobile live streaming app that is growing rapidly among teenagers. Flurry gives teenagers an intimate way to connect with their favorite social media stars (and with each other) using live video. Social media stars use Flurry to stream live while their followers watch and interact with text chat, emojis, stickers and virtual gifts. Followers can join on the screen to video chat with the streamer. Flurry offers a revenue share to the most popular stars giving them an opportunity to monetize their use of the app. Flurry is different from Facebook Live and Periscope because it is totally focused on the teenage demographic whereas these other apps are used by an older audience. In addition, Flurry offers a direct monetization opportunity for the most popular streamers by sharing revenue from the virtual gifts that followers purchase to show admiration and get noticed. Flurry is part of a much bigger trend of major changes in Hollywood and the entertainment industry. Flurry, like other social media platforms, provides a way for performing artists to grow and engage their audience directly. Decades ago, for example, young musicians needed a talent agent and a record deal to make it big. Today, young talent can build and monetize their audience on social media without Hollywood middlemen. We have some interesting technical challenges related to scaling low-latency live video to thousands of viewers while preserving low latency for face-to-face interaction (like Facetime). We are using WebRTC for the audio/video as well as Go, Redis, and Swift. We're based in San Francisco on 2nd and Market. We have 13 employees and are looking to hire 2-3 software engineers with experience in back-end development and iOS (we use Go and Swift, but will consider candidates with other specific skills).
