Matching black-owned food/bev businesses with professional volunteers to increase their business
During the segregated and violent Jim Crow era, the Negro Motorist Green Book helped Black people across America find reprieve. Created in 1936 by Victor Green, the Green Book was published annually until 1964. It featured up-to-date listings of establishments that served and provided refuge for Black Americans, such as hotels, gas stations, grocery stores, night clubs, restaurants, and “tourist homes,” where homeowners welcomed travelers who had nowhere else to go.

Today, Spicy Green Book aims to continue the legacy of this iconic pamphlet. Our directory of Black-owned food and beverage businesses makes it easy for potential consumers to find and support them. But it’s about more than the directory. We also have a team of volunteers who can offer marketing and storytelling services to help our featured business owners find and amplify their voices.
