After 70 years of powering ships with the same, highly polluting fuel, the shipping industry is facing a series of environmental regulations (IMO 2020, BWT, IMO2050) and a drive to green energy, requiring retrofits for the majority of the world’s fleet. Ballast Water Treatment (BWTS) retrofits alone affect 60,000 ships, followed by energy conversions and ship repurposing.
This enormous task is compounded by recent global travel restrictions, with engineers, experts, and surveyors unable travel to the 90,000 merchant ships, which are sailing or implementing retrofits in shipyards and require remote monitoring and support.
