Primal Space is developing a pioneering software technology that we believe will reinvent interactive game streaming. This technology is called the GPEG (Geometry Pump Engine Group) protocol. GPEG uses Visibility Event Packets rather than video packets to stream the content. This technology will markedly reduce the cost of providing the stream, while significantly increasing the quality-of-service; delivering fluid, responsive game streaming at lower bandwidths and higher network latencies, and much lower costs than video-based game streaming. The GPEG visibility event packets contain precisely those textured 3D surfaces of the content that are about to become visible to the virtual camera viewpoint in the game environment. These packets are entirely precomputed by the (offline) GPEG encoder which employs new methods of high-precision from-region visibility precomputation. The precomputed packets can be inexpensively streamed from any server, the streaming does not require expensive virtualized GPUs. The packets are streamed to the client-side game engine running GPEG-client middleware, where they can improve rendering performance by virtually eliminating graphics overdraw. GPEG streaming is nominally prefetch, which overcomes video’s latency and jitter issues, & enables streaming of VR content. GPEG is being built to change the way games are delivered by broadband and wireless, & to enable entirely new forms of interactive entertainment such as eTVe (the Encoded Transmission of Visibility Events). eTVe is immersive interactive television, powered by today's high performance game engines, and fueled by a GPEG data stream delivering the next generation of immersive, interactive content. Always-on game engines running on console or next-gen set-top boxes! GPEG will create new audiences and new markets for game engine content, and client-side graphics hardware. Cool stuff!
