New Equilibrium is designing drugs for a class of currently undrugged targets, termed intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs), through their computational-experimental platform. Most proteins implicated in cancers and neurodegenerative disorders contain large, highly flexible regions that fluctuate between experimentally undetectable, short-lived conformations. The lack of experimental details for these regions presents a challenge to traditional drug discovery approaches, which rely on a protein’s structural information to design and optimize drugs that target that protein. In fact, no drugs have made it to market that target IDPs. New Equilibrium's platform addresses this challenge by interweaving physics, state-of-the-art experiments, and AI to generate highly accurate structural models of IDP conformations that can be used with existing structure-based drug discovery approaches. Their business model is to out-license novel drug candidates to pharmaceutical companies for further development, and they additionally plan to develop medicines in-house.
