We started Mulu in a garage in Menlo Park with no heat and no bathroom -- age old story, but the deep learning platform we were building was brand frikkin new -- built to process billions of pages of web content to identify any one of millions of commercially available products, however and wherever they were mentioned online. Why? Because there are 400 million new product mentions a day online, and knowing which products are mentioned where -- how often, by whom, and along with what else -- is cash money gold for personalized commerce, ad targeting, and content recommendations -- in other words a better web experience for users, publishers, and advertisers alike. We started out by powering on-page commerce for publishers like Hearst, Conde Nast, Huffington Post, and Martha Stewart via a one-size-fits-all widget called the MuluBox -- a shopping guide that automatically detected the products mentioned on each URL and offered them for sale. We got so much love for the accuracy of our product identification, we opened up the API to allow partners to use the data however they chose. Now publishers, ad platforms, social platforms, and retailers can query our API with a URL to get back every product mentioned, along with excerpt, product description, price, image, category, retailer, and monetized link. We've been blown away by our customers plans for all that data -- automating affiliate links, updating ad creative on the fly to reflect the products on the page, and enabling scaled social commerce and curation.
