MindPortal exists to bring about the next generation of personal computing devices, in the form of a wearable neural interface device.The quest for a more seamless, intuitive, and powerful means of interfacing with our digital surroundings has been continually upgrading since the advent of the first computer. From the early days of punch cards and command-line interfaces, we've evolved to touchscreens and voice commands. Yet, the next frontier in this evolution is to directly bridge the gap between human thoughts and goals to digital action, i.e. to produce human to machine ‘telepathy’. Humans possess an innate ability to envision complex scenarios, imagine conversations, and conceptualise abstract ideas, all within the confines of the mind. Our thoughts, in essence, are a series of complex neural patterns that encode information. Imagine a future where these patterns could be directly interpreted and acted upon by a computer system. The sheer thought of sending an email, drafting a document, or even designing a structure could be directly conveyed to an AI implementor, which would then execute the task. This would provide an unprecedented level of efficiency, eliminating the need for traditional input methods such as typing or speaking. Existing BCIs, while promising, have considerable limitations. Many current systems require invasive procedures, wherein electrodes are implanted directly into the brain. These processes come with potential health risks and are not suitable for the general population. Moreover, these systems can only be implanted into singular brain areas, and don’t enable larger-scale data collection for AI analysis. Existing non-invasive systems, on the other hand, have so far been limited in their granularity, requiring long-training times to just enable binary control of a system in a non-intuitive manner (for example by imagining moving your left or right arm).
