Unobtrusive sensor technology paired with deep learning neural networks and big data will provide a cost-effective way to monitor and detect signs of an acute medical event for adults with chronic illnesses living in their home or in assisted care facilities. The goal is to reduce the number of trips (currently 10+ trips per year) that patients with chronic health conditions will make to emergency departments every year.

MEDANN’s model is based on that abnormal behavior patterns can be captured by “smart” environmental sensors by interpreting changes in resident condition and immediately “alert care providers to take a closer look” which enables a timely response before conditions deteriorate and function dramatically declines. Of course, certain treatments require hospital admission but “the push” is to reduce unnecessary hospitalization for things that can be handled in skilled assisted living facilities.
