In 3rd world countries & rural areas, there's limited access to eye doctors. Ophthalmologists/optometrists live so far away they're virtually inaccessible. This is a huge problem, especially with glaucoma, which has no visible symptoms in its early stages. So the only way people would know they have it is if they visited an ophthalmologist. Millions become unnecessarily blind because of this.
Lumos translates clinical glaucoma screening into a low-cost, automated process. There are 2 components. (1) A lens that clips onto a smartphone camera and takes high quality pictures of the retina. It costs around $30 vs $30,000 slit-lamps. (2) An app that scans the image for patterns of glaucoma and gives the patient a full-blown eye report in a few seconds using computer vision and deep learning. This way, rural clinics and people without access to doctors can take this quick exam, monitor progression, and expose early signs of glaucoma. Patients who otherwise have no idea can seek treatment.
