Without LiRA, mute individuals are forced to write their thoughts with pen and paper (fatiguing and slow) or point to pictures on pictures board (limited vocabulary) which can be arduous and inefficient. LiRA provides a near real-time lip-reading software which can reduce mental burden on mute individuals, save time communicating at home and in hospitals, and improve mental wellbeing of individuals and their caregivers.
