With messaging apps dominating time spent on mobile, the internet of things finally taking off with Amazon Echo, and VR & AR on the horizon, it's clear that computer interfaces are rapidly moving from graphical to natural language. These new conversational platforms are creating opportunities for new types of relationships with users - not only assistants, like Siri, but coaches and confidants with whom we'll develop deep, meaningful connections over time. We're building the natural language AI systems that will support these relationships - enabling computers to participate in extended, coherent, context-rich conversations with people. To get there, we're developing new AI frameworks, capable of exploiting multiple representations of meaning, maintaining coherent dialogue over many turns, and explaining their own decisions. Based on 8 years of research at MIT, a decade of experience building award-winning video game AI, and inspired by the ability of human children to acquire language from few examples, our systems use context to learn from sparse human dialogue data, and improve with subsequent evidence and human feedback.
