Achieving landscape restoration (FLR) at scale is vital to mitigating climate change, biodiversity loss and social injustice, particularly in the tropics. Of course, FLR is costly and time consuming. Funds are primarily supplied by companies establishing sustainable supply chains or government donors. These funds are meant to support and incentive a transition to 'sustainable' practices among farmers and other landscape actors.

The problem is that current FLR financing systems depend on opaque cash distribution systems that are vulnerable to fraud and elite capture. As a result, landscape investors are hesitant to invest and landscape actors have minimal incentive to act. Gaiachain is developing innovative blockchain based tools to make FLR payment systems more transparent and efficient.

Gaichain was founded in 2018 and is registered in the UK. Our core team consists of two forest governance experts with a combined 20 years of experience managing complex environmental programmes with various organisations including UNEP, World Resources Institute, Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, and the Environmental Investigation Agency. Our team also includes an advisor/investor with over 10 years of relevant tech and management experience.

In terms of traction, we have implemented FAO and EU funded pilot projects in Ivory Coast to support ‘sustainable’ cocoa and charcoal supply chains. We are launching a new initiative in collaboration with a global environmental organisation that focuses on developing efficient and transparent ecological restoration payment systems. Leading the development of that system on the Algorand blockchain will be your first responsibility.
