Information and Communication Technologies for Development

One of our main areas of expertise is Information and Communication Technologies for Development (ICT4D). ICTs can be powerful tools in the hands of those working to improve health, education, sanitation. Our goal is to design user-friendly and efficient software to help our partners’ achieve their goals.

Currently, half the world does not have access to adequate health services. Additionally, the burden of poor health affects disproportionately those already living in poverty. In the past years, the domain of digital health has been identified as a key to achieving globally accessible health care. With mobile coverage and usage continuing to increase around the world, the mobile phone can be a critical tool in the delivery of health care, especially for those in remote areas.

Several of our apps work with DHIS2, a free and open source health management data platform widely used in countries around the world, especially in Africa. More than 80 countries are deploying DHIS2 on a national scale. It represents a huge step for countries transitioning from using paper reports to electronic reports. By using an easy-to-use applications, even people hard of reading can quickly report information from the field. Some of our apps even allow sending health data in near real-time. They are also adapted to isolated rural areas of developing countries, optimizing the amount of traffic sent and received to and from the network and being able to fully work offline when needed. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), one of our partners, technology is at the backbone of improving medical services to prevent, diagnose, and treat illness and disease.

We believe using open software for ICT4D is important to the communities involved because then local developers can be encouraged to get involved in the development. This cooperative approach also reduces the cost of development by sharing investment among several
