The co-founders are four PhD scientists from Harvard Medical School, Johns Hopkins University, Microsoft, and Google, combining a broad spectrum of technical skills and insights from the fields of Biology, Physics, and Computer Science. The staggering cost of developing new drugs, estimated at $3–12B per drug, is a major challenge facing the pharmaceutical industry. A key driver of the cost is the high failure rate in testing and validation of drug candidates, which in turn arises from the high percentage of scientific findings that cannot be replicated by others after their publication. Scientific ideas supported by elites in the field are favored for publication and funding, creating a self-reinforcing loop instead of free, merit-based competition of ideas. As a result, academic scientific findings, which are the raw material for drug development, suffer severely from subjective partiality of the scientific community. Present strategies to mitigate this risk are either ineffective or costly because they do not address the realities of how the scientific community and its reward systems operate. We intimately understand the culture, sensitivities, reward systems, and career considerations within the scientific community that lead to the problem and limit the range of viable solutions. Hence, we are particularly well positioned to develop effective solutions that utilize state-of-the-art data analytics to amplify the collective wisdom of communities of scientists.
