Do you want to work for a mission-driven non-profit, creating technology and writing software that will contribute to helping millions of coffee farmers out of poverty? Enveritas is a 501(c)3 non-profit and Y Combinator-backed startup looking to hire experienced engineers in the United States, preferably near to New York City. Our engineering team writes software used for gathering and analyzing data about coffee farmers. Our clients, coffee companies of all shapes and sizes, use this data to understand the “ground truth” — that is, a more nuanced view on the state of sustainability practices around social, environmental, and economic issues. Through our work, smallholder coffee farmers gain new opportunities to participate in a sustainable coffee industry. As a non-profit, we assist smallholder coffee farmers through technical assistance and training programs. Although we may be a small engineering team, we have a lot on our plate. Our current challenge is to build up our core data and analytics platform, which has a lot of interesting problems around survey questionnaire design. We have other fun problems too. How can we tell where coffee is grown, using satellite imagery and machine learning? How do we make sure our surveyors, when talking to coffee farmers, have the right technical tools to gather data in places where internet connectivity and even GPS signals drop out? What datasets can we start gathering now with manually tagging, so we can build out computational models in the future using the in-house data we create? Looking further out, there are an amazing number of possibilities to combine datasets (e.g. climate change, deforestation levels) to offer new insights that can have life-altering impact for millions of coffee farmers.
