eleQtron will build an ion-based quantum computer. Ions are not an exotic choice: they have been one of the first candidates for implementing the basic building block of a quantum computer, the qubit, and they remain one of the two most promising ones. It is often said that ions are nature’s qubit. That is true: unlike other possible qubits, each ion is perfectly alike – no sophisticated fabrication methods are necessary. This is underscored by the fact that in almost every conceivable metric used to quantify a physical system’s suitability as a qubit, ions dominate impressively. The precision of computational operations on ion qubits is better; they store their current states for much longer times; and they can communicate with each other even if they are not direct neighbors. They do not require cooling to ultracold temperatures close to absolute zero. The list goes on. Investments in other qubit candidates were largely fueled by the assumption that ion qubits would not scale well – that it would be impossible or very hard to add large numbers of qubits to enhance a quantum computer’s power. But in recent years research by us, among others, has demonstrated that it will be in fact possible to scale an ion-based quantum computer.
