With the world moving towards electrification and clean energy, batteries and energy storage devices are gathering the focus of attention. Lithium-ion batteries seem to fit the bill for the new age applications for energy storage, but still have a few challenges, especially concerning safety and reliability, heat and life. The other big challenge with battery technology is scalability. With electrification of transport, the market size for these batteries would grow a few thousand-fold in possibly a decade. To create the capacity for manufacturing such a large amount of batteries in such a short period of time requires an inherent scalability of technology, which is lacking today.
Thus, the challenge is two-fold; improving performance, safety and reliability of batteries, while improving scalability and economics of manufacturing. At e-TRNL Energy, we are solving these twin problems, with a unique battery cell design solution coupled with a completely fresh cell manufacturing process technology. e-TRNL's cell design allows us to reduce inherent cell heating which is the cause of most battery life, reliability and safety issues, with the induction of certain novel design elements improves the inherent fire safety characteristics of the cells. The manufacturing process on the other hand, is designed to reduce the capital required to set up and operate cell manufacturing factories (or Gigafactories), and yet at the same time improve the consistency and reliability of cell manufacturing.
