When we think of the Canadian Healthcare System, we often think of it as an everlasting truth: it always was and always will be. In reality, our system was created in 1966 with the Medical Care Act. It is a 50 year old “experiment” that was not designed to face the challenges of modern times. Its costs are rising faster than GDP growth, reaching over $250B in 2018 with 25% of its workers burning out at some point in their career. The system, in its current state, will not be sustainable in the long run. We want to create an alternative public healthcare system. One that will re-engineer our patients’ and doctors’ experience to create a sustainable environment in which our health professionals will enjoy working and that will be beneficial to our patients’ healing.
