As the world strives to reach net zero carbon emission goals, the construction industry has a huge role to play in making concrete more sustainable. Concrete is the most used material in world after water and it accounts for 8% of the world’s carbon (CO2) emissions. If nothing is done, this is set to rise to 40% by 2050. Established in 2021, Concrete4Change is a UN award-winning R&D start-up on a mission to decarbonise the construction industry through disruptive technological innovation. The company is developing a technology capable of sequestering significant amounts of CO2 in concrete (up to 30%) - this has the potential to revolutionise the industry on a global scale. The technology incorporates a solid-state carrier which transfers CO2 into concrete through a mineralisation process which strengthens the concrete. This ensures that in the event of demolition, there is no leakage of CO2. This technology has the potential to mitigate 2 billion tonnes of CO2 emissions, which is the equivalent of 4% of global CO2 emissions, and can also reduce production costs dramatically, minimise CO2 tax liability and reduce the carbon footprint of the construction industry. As of today, Concrete4Change has received a number of awards and accolades including having won the United Nations most innovative net-zero technology award at COP-26, being named as one of the top 10 start-ups in the EIC Climate-KIC Accelerator, being one of the top 10 companies selected by the Brazilian Ideiagov for tackling Latin America's Net-Zero Challenge and winning grant funding from the Royal Academy of Engineering. C4C has recently closed it's first round of private investment.
