CHOOSING A LAWYER WISELY: More than thirty years ago I wrote a book designed to help people choose the best lawyer at the lowest fee. Most people choose a lawyer by asking friends who hired lawyers for similar cases. For example, if one is facing a divorce then he or she would talk to some friends who have gone through a divorce and ask them who they hired and how they liked that lawyer. But while it isn’t a bad idea to ask people how they liked their lawyer, reliance on that alone can lead to a bad choice.
Quite often the person you ask is not really qualified to evaluate their lawyer. Also, people will tend to judge a lawyer by the outcome of their case. If they win they believe the lawyer is great. If they lose, they blame the lawyer and wish they had hired someone else. But the fact is, all cases are not equal.
