The buildings and construction sector accounted for 36% of final energy use and 39% of energy and process-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in 2018, 11% of which resulted from manufacturing building materials and products such as steel, cement and glass. (Global Status Report, UNEP 2019) In a reversal of the previous five years, buildings sector emissions appear to have risen to 9.7 GtCO2 in 2018 – an increase of 2% since 2017, and 7% higher than in 2010. (Global Status Report, UNEP 2019) Construction Tech poses an opportunity to solve this problem by adding carbon estimating into construction workflows. However, technology companies are coming unstuck at one point - connecting the construction nomenclature to the carbon dataset. With other softwares and EPD access points, it is necessary to get the user to select a dataset and assign an emission factor to the material. This can add significant time and require specialist knowledge, particularly for complex/larger projects which can have hundreds of line items to resolve. Cercula cuts out this step using a mapping algorithm, powered by data science, getting the best fit emission factor in seconds. This unique algorithm is powered by a network of 1000s of construction material keywords mapped to our carbon database of 20,000 environmental datasets.
