Reproducibility is core to the scientific method. To have confidence in a result, we should be able to run the same experiment, in the same way, and find the same thing. Over the past decade, it has become clear that a huge proportion of scientific results cannot be reproduced, casting doubt on what we think we know, and slowing scientific progress. We believe that this reproducibility crisis is partly a symptom of a deeper issue. There is no standardised, structured and complete record of how experiments are done. Across swathes of private and public research it’s often not possible to figure out how an experiment has been run. Imagine trying to reuse someone else’s code that is only 10% complete — it’d be easier to start from scratch.
