Since the first personal computers were unveiled 50 years ago, the amount and complexity of digital information that we interact with has grown by many orders of magnitude. However, the underlying graphical user interface for navigating this information hasn't changed: the rectilinear grid.

Based on index cards, the GUI simply wasn't designed to enable intuitive, efficient interactions with this much data. It's like drinking from the ocean with a straw.
