Lithium ion (Li-ion) batteries are a commonly used type of rechargeable battery with a global market predicted to grow to $60Billion by 2020.

Researchers have looked to silicon (Si) because of its high storage capacity. However, the large volume change of silicon during charge–discharge cycles weakens its volumetric energy density and cycle life.

The type of Si anode I am recommending solves the silicon cycle life problem, thus enabling its greater energy density properties to be harnessed. It takes advantage of a mature technology and integrates it in to Li-ion battery production. While improving the performance, it reduces the cost of manufacturing. It also takes advantage of using scrap silicon, therefore, making one of the main components of the battery, Si anode, ultimately very inexpensive while helping the environment by recycling the scrap silicon.
