Seafood is the most widely-eaten animal protein in the world. 178M metric tons per year are harvested through fishing and aquaculture. Because of this extraordinary demand, approximately 90% of the world’s fisheries are currently overfished or fished at max capacity. Aquaculture has grown in the last twenty years, but many wild-caught species cannot be grown in captivity. In order to continue to have the diversity of seafood consumers expect, the world needs new solutions as we move towards a population of 10 billion people by 2050. Cellular agriculture leverages technology to grow animal cells in bioreactors for cultivated meat and seafood. No animal slaughter is required to provide consumers with real animal-based protein. For seafood, this allows us to continue to have the wild species consumers want with a fraction of the carbon footprint of commercial fishing.
