About the job
Senior Software Engineer
Backend and Integrations - Full-time. Hybrid (Los Angeles, CA, United States)
The Guestbook is a hotel rewards platform. Members earn cash back when they book direct, and hotels pay us to drive those bookings. All of it depends on getting accurate reservation data out of hotel systems. As a Senior Software Engineer you'll own the backend that does this. That covers PMS integrations, booking engine integrations, webhooks and the background jobs that turn stays into rewards.
We're a small team. You'll own projects end-to-end, from scoping with a PMS vendor to shipping and monitoring in production.
Our stack is Ruby on Rails, PostgreSQL, Redis, Sidekiq and Elasticsearch on AWS, with a React frontend and BigQuery for analytics. We use AI coding tools like Claude Code every day and expect you will too.
What You'll Be Doing
• Build and maintain integrations with property management systems such as Mews and Cloudbeds. This includes REST APIs, webhooks, and SFTP and emailed file feeds.
• Design ingestion that holds up when vendor data arrives late, duplicated or malformed. Idempotent imports, field mapping, validation and replay.
• Own the money paths. Reward calculations, redemptions, guest bills and hotel invoicing have to be correct to the cent.
• Run and improve our Sidekiq job fleet, including retries, scheduling, queue health and failure alerting.
• Build monitoring that tells us a hotel's data stopped flowing before the hotel notices.
• Work directly with hotel partners and PMS vendors on onboarding, certification and live debugging.
• Keep API and webhook endpoints secure with signature verification, authentication and rate limiting.
• Review code, write tests and raise the bar for the team.
What You'll Bring to The Guestbook
• 5+ years of backend engineering, including production systems that handle money or third-party data.
• Strong Ruby on Rails. Deep experience in another backend framework also works if you're willing to learn Rails quickly.
• Strong SQL and PostgreSQL. You can read a query plan and fix a slow query on a large table.
• Experience building third-party API integrations, webhook consumers and background job systems.
• Experience debugging production issues from logs, traces and the data itself.
• Clear written communication. You'll explain integration problems to hotel staff and vendor engineers.
• Degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
Nice to Haves
• Hospitality tech experience, especially PMS, booking engine, CRS or channel manager integrations (Mews, Cloudbeds, Oracle OPERA, SynXis, HTNG or OTA specs).
• Experience with payments, loyalty programs or financial ledgers.
• Elasticsearch, BigQuery or dbt.
• AWS and GCP operations experience.
• Enough React to build internal admin tools.
• Production use of LLMs for things like data mapping or support tooling.
Benefits
The Guestbook offers a comprehensive benefits package designed to support your well-being and future growth:
• 20 PTO days annually (and we encourage you to use them!)
• Health & Welfare Benefits (Medical/Rx, Dental, Vision)
• Flexible Spending Accounts
• Short- and Long-Term Disability Insurance
• Life & Accident Insurance
• 401(k) Retirement Savings Plan
Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. We are unable to sponsor or assume visa sponsorship at this time.
