The Mechanical Design Engineer duties include engineering analyses, design development, design reviews, field verification, and design recovery for existing facilities, new construction, facility refurbishment, and system modernization projects. Work may include vessels, tanks, piping and utility systems, material-handling equipment, remote tooling, facility deactivation and decommissioning (D&D), operations support, and related mechanical systems at Department of Energy sites, including Portsmouth and Hanford.

  • Develop, analyze, review, and document mechanical designs for new facilities, facility modifications, refurbishment projects, and system modernization efforts, including vessels, tanks, piping, supports, material-handling equipment, lifting devices, remote tooling, and specialized mechanical equipment.
  • Prepare and review design criteria, engineering calculations, specifications, datasheets, statements of work, procurement packages, drawings, technical reports, and other documentation establishing the design basis, assumptions, interfaces, equipment selections, and technical decisions.
  • Evaluate existing equipment and facility conditions through review of design records, vendor data, operating information, field walkdowns, inspections, measurements, and system evaluations to support design development and design recovery.
  • Provide mechanical engineering support for facility deactivation and decommissioning (D&D), including equipment isolation, removal planning, temporary configurations, and coordination of utility and power disconnect requirements with the responsible disciplines.
  • Review designs for safety, constructability, operability, maintainability, accessibility, inspection, testing, and compatibility with existing facility systems and operating requirements.
  • Coordinate mechanical requirements and interfaces with civil, structural, electrical, instrumentation and controls, process, HVAC, fire protection, construction, operations, and maintenance personnel.
  • Review vendor and supplier documentation for technical compliance and provide engineering support during procurement, fabrication, construction, installation, testing, commissioning, startup, and operational readiness.
  • Apply applicable DOE requirements, consensus codes and standards, site procedures, and project-specific requirements while participating in design reviews, technical meetings, risk evaluations, field-condition resolution, and preparation of technical recommendations.

Requirements

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program, with at least five years of relevant engineering experience.
  • Experience supporting industrial, nuclear, government, energy, manufacturing, or other highly regulated facilities.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical design principles, engineering calculations, technical specifications, and applicable industry codes and standards.
  • Ability to prepare clear technical documentation and work effectively with multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Successful drug screening.
  • Must be eligible to obtain and maintain required site access and a security or clearance badge.
  • Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance if required by the assigned project; qualified candidates will be considered regardless of current clearance status.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting DOE, nuclear, environmental remediation, or other federal projects, particularly at the Portsmouth or Hanford sites.
  • Experience with facility modifications, system modernization, brownfield design, design recovery, or D&D projects.
  • Experience with vessels, tanks, piping systems, material-handling equipment, lifting devices, remote handling equipment, robotics, or specialized tooling.
  • Familiarity with applicable ASME, ANSI, AWS, AGS, CMAA, OSHA, and DOE standards and requirements.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Creo, Inventor, or similar CAD software and mechanical analysis tools.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license, Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification, or active DOE clearance.
