About Wind Harvest
Wind Harvest International is a renewable energy company developing and commercializing vertical-axis wind turbine technology. As we scale toward increased commercial operations, we need a finance function that is accurate, well controlled, and built to grow with us. The Controller will be working out of QuickBooks until we fully transition to the NetSuite ERP system, inclusive of its General Ledger and accounting systems.
Compensation
Base Salary: $100,000 - $140,000 annually, depending on experience, qualifications, and demonstrated expertise.
Incentive Compensation: Eligible for performance-based incentive compensation. The incentive structure will evolve as Wind Harvest advances toward commercial sales.
Work Arrangement: Hybrid position based in Davis, California, with an expectation of approximately three days per week in the office.
The Role
Until we hire a CFO, the Controller will be Wind Harvest’s accounting and finance leader. This is a hands-on role: you will personally run full-cycle accounting of the books, reconciliations, close, and reporting. The person will also be responsible for improving the processes, controls, and documentation the company needs to scale.
You will work closely with the executive team, HR, our outside accountants and tax advisors, and legal counsel. You will also be involved in setup and maintenance of manufacturing cost accounting and inventory control working closely with product design, manufacturing and project management on establishing production cost accounting systems over time.
What You’ll Do
- Accounting and close. Own the general ledger and day-to-day bookkeeping: journal entries, accruals, prepaids, fixed assets, and bank, credit card, and balance-sheet reconciliations. Run a disciplined month-, quarter-, and year-end close in accordance with GAAP. Additionally, manage multi-entity and intercompany accounting, including intercompany transactions, reconciliations, eliminations, and consolidation activities, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting across entities.
- Inventory.Partner with Operations to oversee inventory accounting and controls, including understanding inventory processes and manufacturing routings in NetSuite, monitoring inventory valuation and transactions, and reconciling inventory and related accounts as part of the month-end close process.
- AP, AR, and payroll accounting. Manage vendor payments, customer invoicing, collections, and employee reimbursements. Own payroll and benefits accounting in coordination with HR and our payroll provider.
- Financial reporting. Produce monthly financial statements, budget-to-actual and project-level reporting, and cash-flow forecasts that help leadership make decisions.
- NetSuite. Be the company’s primary owner of NetSuite’s accounting functionality: confirm the accuracy of migrated balances, maintain the chart of accounts, manage workflows, approvals, and permissions, and identify opportunities to automate.
- Investor accounting. Accurately record and reconcile equity, promissory notes, and other financing; keep accounting records aligned with the cap table; and respond to authorized investor requests about their individual investments. (Fundraising and investor relations remain with the CEO.) Additionally, support the establishment and management of an investor accounting platform.
- Controls and policies. Build right-sized internal controls, segregation of duties, approval workflows, and purchasing and expense policies, including the financial components of our Delegation of Authority.
- Cash and treasury. Monitor cash, manage banking relationships and payment authority, and support leadership with cash planning.
- Tax, audit, and compliance. Prepare schedules and support for outside CPAs, including tax filings, 1099s, audits or reviews, and investor due diligence.
- Scaling the function. Write SOPs, reduce key-person dependency, and advise leadership on when to add accounting resources.
What You BringRequired
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience
- Experience accounting for equity and debt financing (promissory notes, convertible instruments) and reconciling against cap-table records
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including hands-on ownership of full-cycle accounting, month-end close, and financial statement preparation
- Experience with multi-entity accounting, including intercompany transactions, reconciliations, eliminations, and consolidated financial reporting
- Strong working knowledge of GAAP
- Experience with ERP systems, and strong Excel skills
- A track record of building or improving accounting processes and controls
- Willingness to do the transactional work yourself, and the judgment to work independently in a startup environment
- The ability to hire and train subordinate accounting staff, and the ability to train and support senior and junior staff on ERP system inputs required for accounting functions
- Discretion with confidential financial and investor information
Preferred
- CPA or willing to work on passing the CPA exam in 2 years of hiring
- Prior experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, or Accounting Manager
- NetSuite experience
- Startup experience, ideally in renewable energy, manufacturing, construction, or another project-based industry, including project/job-cost accounting
