About the job

The Senior Soft Goods Designer is responsible for developing original textile and rug designs for Schoolhouse, translating the brand’s distinct point of view into thoughtfully designed home products. This role combines creativity, craftsmanship, and a strong understanding of color, pattern, material, and construction to develop textiles that feel authentic to the Schoolhouse brand and complement its broader product assortment.

Working closely with Product Design, Merchandising, and cross-functional partners, the Senior Soft Goods Designer will contribute to the development of new collections from initial concept and inspiration through pattern development, colorways, sampling, and final production. The ideal candidate has a strong eye for pattern and color, an appreciation for vintage-inspired design and enduring craftsmanship, and the ability to balance creative exploration with commercial considerations.

Hudson Valley Lighting Group is a worldwide leader in the design, manufacturing, and omnichannel distribution of decorative and architectural lighting fixtures, encompassing six brands: Hudson Valley Lighting, Mitzi, Troy, Corbett, CSL, and Sonneman (on behalf of Hudson Valley Lighting, Inc., Troy-CSL, Inc. and SN Modern, LLC). As the one-stop shop for the most comprehensive selection of lighting, HVLG seeks to inspire and support our customers in their pursuit to achieve a home that perfectly reflects their clients. HVLG takes a designer-forward approach to the light-purchasing process — making the experience more inspiring, exciting, and inviting. At HVLG, we believe that great lighting has the power to elevate any space and enrich people's lives — and it's that guiding philosophy that ties our family of brands together.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead concept-to-production design of textile and/or rug products (pillows, throws, bedding, area rugs, table linens, etc.) for the home goods category.
  • Present seasonal concepts and collections to leadership and cross-functional teams, incorporating feedback into final designs.
  • Develop original prints, patterns, and colorways, translating trend research and brand direction into salable seasonal collections.
  • Create tech packs, artwork files, and construction specs — repeats and colorways for textiles, or pile height, knot count, and weave/tuft construction for rugs — for overseas mills and vendors.
  • Propose and evaluate fabrics, yarns, trims, and materials, balancing hand-feel, durability, cost targets, and quality standards.
  • Partner with product development, sourcing, and merchandising to align designs with pricing, margin, and delivery timelines.
  • Alongside PD, manage color approvals, lab dips, strike-offs, and rug or textile sample rounds through the sample and production process.
  • Mentor designers and lead the maintenance of the studio's textile and rug archive and trend library.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Textile Design, Surface Design, Fashion Design, or a related field.
  • 7+ years of design experience in textiles, rugs, or a related home goods/soft-goods category.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator; working knowledge of repeat pattern or rug CAD software is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of textile and/or rug construction and techniques.
  • Experience developing tech packs and communicating specs directly with overseas mills and vendors.
  • Proven track record taking designs from concept through to launch, on time and within cost targets.

Skills & Competencies

  • Sharp eye for color, pattern, and trend forecasting, with the ability to translate market signals into on-brand collections.
  • Comfortable balancing creative vision with commercial realities like cost, margin, and production feasibility.
  • Strong cross-functional collaborator, working fluently with product development, sourcing, and merchandising.
  • Confident presenter, able to articulate design concepts and rationale to senior stakeholders.
  • Organized and detail-oriented, managing multiple seasonal lines and deadlines at once.
  • Experience managing or mentoring designers is a plus.
