About the job
As a SW Specialist on the Wearables Interfaces Engineering team, you will serve as a technical leader responsible for optimizing and integrating platform-level software that runs atop Meta's wearable device stack. Working closely with the Core OS team, you will bridge the gap between operating system capabilities and the application/experience layers. This position requires a holistic view across firmware, OS interfaces, frameworks, middleware, and applications to ensure seamless platform integration and optimal device performance. You will drive cross-functional system design decisions, resolve complex multi-component issues, and set the technical direction for how platform software leverages Core OS to deliver immersive user experiences.
SW Specialist - Wearables Interfaces Engineering Responsibilities:
- Platform Architecture & Integration: Drive platform software architecture for wearable devices, ensuring coherent integration across Core OS interfaces, frameworks, middleware, and application layers
- Cross-Stack Technical Leadership: Lead system-level initiatives that span OS-to-application boundaries, optimizing frameworks, system services, and applications for performance, reliability, and power efficiency
- End-to-End System Debugging: Own resolution of complex, ambiguous issues that span multiple components—OS interfaces, drivers, frameworks, and application software—identifying root causes and driving fixes across teams including Core OS
- System Performance & Optimization: Analyze and optimize platform-level performance, latency, memory usage, and power consumption across the framework and application stack
- Core OS Partnership: Collaborate with the Core OS team to define platform requirements, influence OS roadmaps, and ensure platform needs are met by underlying OS capabilities
- System Health & Reliability: Establish metrics, monitoring, and frameworks to maintain overall system health and reliability for platform software across the wearables portfolio
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with Core OS, hardware, firmware, connectivity, multimedia, and product teams to align technical strategies and resolve dependencies
- Mentorship & Technical Excellence: Mentor engineers across disciplines, fostering systems thinking and best practices for cross-stack development
- Documentation & Communication: Communicate platform architecture decisions, integration strategies, and technical trade-offs to stakeholders at all levels clearly and concisely
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience
- Expert-level understanding of platform architecture, including interactions between OS (Linux/Android), system services, frameworks, and application software
- Proven track record of leading complex platform integration efforts across OS, frameworks, and application teams
- Strong experience with system-level debugging tools and methodologies (system traces, performance profilers, memory analyzers)
- Strong programming skills in C/C++ and/or Java/Kotlin with experience debugging across multiple layers of the stack
- Familiarity with hardware interfaces and how they surface through OS/driver layers to platform software
- Deep understanding of power management, thermal constraints, and performance optimization at the platform level
- Experience applying analytical and problem-solving approaches to complex systems issues and communicating technical decisions to technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Experience leading cross-functional teams to ship consumer electronics or embedded devices at scale
- 10+ years of experience in systems engineering, platform software, or embedded systems development with increasing levels of system-level responsibility
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with wearable devices, AR/VR systems, or mobile device platforms
- Background in sensor systems, connectivity (BT/WiFi/Cellular), multimedia, or neural interfaces at the platform layer
- Experience working with Core OS teams to define requirements and influence OS capabilities
- Familiarity with hardware interfaces and how they surface through OS/driver layers to platform software
- Experience with Android platform internals, system services, or framework-level software
- Demonstrated ongoing AI skill development (e.g., prompt/context engineering, agent orchestration) and staying current with emerging AI technologies
- Proficiency in scripting languages (Python, Shell) for system automation and analysis
- Experience using AI-powered tools to optimize engineering workflows and drive measurable efficiency gains
- Experience adhering to and implementing responsible, ethical AI practices (e.g., risk assessment, bias mitigation, quality and accuracy reviews)
- Demonstrated ability to integrate AI tools to optimize/redesign workflows and drive measurable impact (e.g., efficiency gains, quality improvements)
- Track record of leading large-scale projects from concept through mass production
