Software Engineering Intern (Part-Time)

Equated builds AI accounting software for contractors. We handle sales taxes, job costing, and all the automated bookkeeping that small businesses hate doing by hand. We're hiring a part-time intern to build and refine the AI workflows behind the product.

Why work here
A lot of this job is about learning. You'll work hands-on with the founder, see how a startup actually runs from the inside, and sit on the line between engineering and accounting. We'll teach you double-entry, debits and credits, and why sales tax is somehow different in every state. What you bring is the building. And you get real mentorship along the way: weekly 1:1s with the founder to go over your work, talk through what you're learning, and figure out what's next.

What you'll do

• Write and refine prompts that do real bookkeeping: categorizing transactions, reconciling accounts, chasing down the numbers that don't add up. When the output is wrong, figure out why and fix the prompt.
• Build and improve AI workflows around messy real-world data from actual businesses. Job costing so a painting company can see what it made on each job. Invoices that don't match. Receipts that make no sense.
• Spot where the automation breaks, dig into the failure, and make it robust.
• Help shape the product. If a workflow is dumb, say so and help redesign it.

Who should apply

• Studying computer science, engineering, or something similar, any year. You don't need accounting experience. We'll teach you the accounting part.
• You've refined a prompt, a script, or some automation that wasn't working right, and you enjoyed the debugging more than you'd admit.
• Comfortable with messy data. You've cleaned up an ugly dataset before and lived to tell the tale.
• Big bonus if you've used ChatGPT or Claude to do your homework for you so you could go have fun with your friends instead.
• Can handle confidential info and follow a written review process.

Logistics

• $20/hour, W-2, 20 hours per week.
• Hybrid in NYC. Some in-person days each week, the rest remote.
• Ongoing part-time role, not just a summer gig.
• Weekly review with the founder
