Role Description The Senior Electrical Engineer will lead and execute electrical design for building projects, ensuring safe, efficient, and code-compliant systems. This full-time, on-site role is based in Fairfax, VA and involves developing power distribution and lighting designs, preparing drawings and specifications, and performing load calculations and short-circuit analyses. The individual will coordinate with multidisciplinary project teams, attend client and stakeholder meetings, and provide technical guidance to junior engineers and designers. Responsibilities include reviewing submittals, supporting construction administration, resolving field issues, and participating in quality control processes. The Senior Electrical Engineer will also contribute to sustainable design strategies, support digital tools and modeling workflows, and help drive continuous improvement in project delivery.
Qualifications
- Candidates should possess strong skills in Electrical Design and Electrical Engineering for building systems.
- Candidates should possess solid knowledge of Electricity fundamentals and their application in engineered systems.
- Candidates should possess experience with Power Distribution and Power Systems for commercial, institutional, or mission-critical facilities.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field; PE licensure preferred or the ability to obtain it.
- Several years of relevant experience in MEP building design, ideally with complex facilities (e.g., healthcare, labs, aviation, education).
- Proficiency with relevant design and modeling tools (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, power system analysis software).
- Working knowledge of applicable codes and standards (e.g., NEC, IEEE, NFPA) and sustainable design practices.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate in a multidisciplinary environment and mentor junior staff.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate in multi discipline project teams to develop drawings and specification documents for issuance to architects, contractors, and building owners.
- Lead electrical system design from the conceptual phase through construction documents, including power distribution, lighting, low-voltage, and emergency power systems.
- Perform and review engineering calculations for equipment sizing, load calculations, and system selection for low, medium, and high voltage systems.
- Develop electrical specifications and design narratives aligned with project requirements and applicable codes, and provide technical guidance to junior engineers in their preparation.
- Coordinate electrical designs with architectural and other engineering disciplines to ensure seamless integration.
- Survey and evaluate existing conditions for renovation and adaptive reuse projects.
- Ensure all designs comply with applicable local, state, and national codes and standards.
- Perform construction administration, including conducting field inspections, preparing inspection reports, reviewing submittals, and responding to RFIs
- Incorporate sustainable design methods independent of benchmarking standards incorporated, e.g., LEED, Well Building, NZEB (Net Zero Energy Building), Living Building Challenge (ILFI), etc.
Qualifications
- Interest in engineering the built environment
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering
- Sound knowledge of engineering fundamentals
- 6–10 years of experience in the facilities design industry (required)
- Proficiency in Revit and AutoCAD
USGBC LEED AP a plus.
