About the job
We are hiring an AWS Cloud Migration Engineer to move our on-premises VMware estate to native Amazon EC2, using AWS Application Migration Service (MGN).
You will join a small core migration team for a 20-week program covering about 100 Windows and Linux VMs. You will run the hands-on work: replication, test launches, cutovers and post-migration tuning. You will work closely with the cloud architect, network and security engineers, and application owners.
Reports to: Migration Project Manager (day to day) and Cloud Architect (technical direction).
Team: Cloud architect, 2 migration engineers, network engineer, security engineer, DBA, and application owners per wave.
Key responsibilities
You will own the technical execution of each migration wave, from discovery data through to a stable workload on EC2.
Discovery and assessment
• Run AWS Application Discovery Service collectors or Export for vCenter to gather inventory and utilization data
• Help map server and application dependencies and group VMs into move groups
• Check guest OS compatibility with MGN and flag unsupported systems
• Right-size VMs to EC2 instance types and EBS volume types using real utilization data
Landing zone and setup
• Work with the architect to build VPCs, subnets and security groups, including the MGN staging subnet
• Initialize MGN and configure replication settings and launch templates
• Validate network paths from source VMs to AWS (TCP 443 and 1500)
Migration execution
• Install and manage MGN replication agents on Windows and Linux VMs
• Monitor replication health, lag and bandwidth; fix stalled or failing replication
• Launch test instances and support application owners through UAT
• Run cutovers to a timed runbook, including DNS and load balancer changes with the network team
• Build post-launch actions: remove VMware Tools, install SSM and CloudWatch agents, apply configuration
• Execute rollbacks when a go/no-go decision requires it
Post-migration
• Support hypercare: troubleshoot performance, connectivity and application issues on EC2
• Set up backups (AWS Backup), monitoring and alerts (CloudWatch), and patching (Systems Manager)
• Tune instance sizes and storage to cut cost without hurting performance
• Clean up staging resources, snapshots and decommissioned source VMs
Documentation and handover
• Write and keep runbooks, wave records and as-built documentation current
• Automate repeatable steps with scripts or infrastructure as code
• Hand over migrated workloads to the operations team with clear support notes
Required qualifications
We need someone who has already moved production workloads from VMware to AWS and knows both sides well.
• 4+ years in infrastructure or systems engineering, with 2+ years hands-on with AWS
• Completed at least one VMware-to-AWS migration of 20+ VMs, using AWS MGN or CloudEndure Migration
• Strong VMware vSphere and vCenter knowledge: VM configuration, storage, networking and VMware Tools
• Solid Amazon EC2, EBS, VPC, IAM and security group skills
• Administration of both Windows Server and Linux (RHEL, Ubuntu or similar)
• Networking fundamentals: TCP/IP, subnets, routing, DNS, firewalls, VPN or Direct Connect
• Scripting in PowerShell, Bash or Python to automate repeatable tasks
• Experience troubleshooting boot, driver and network issues on migrated servers
• Comfortable working in change windows, including planned weekend cutovers
• Clear written documentation and calm communication with application owners during incidents
Preferred qualifications
These skills are a strong plus but not required.
• AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate or Professional, or AWS Certified SysOps Administrator
• VMware Certified Professional (VCP-DCV)
• Experience with AWS Transform for VMware, AWS Migration Hub or Application Discovery Service
• Infrastructure as code with Terraform, AWS CloudFormation or AWS CDK
• AWS Control Tower, Organizations and multi-account landing zones
• AWS Systems Manager, AWS Backup and Amazon CloudWatch in production
• Active Directory in AWS (AWS Managed Microsoft AD or self-managed)
• Database migration with AWS DMS, or SQL Server and Oracle on EC2
• Microsoft licensing on AWS (license-included vs BYOL)
• Work on AWS Migration Acceleration Program (MAP) projects or at an AWS partner
Pay range and compensation package
- Compensation will be offered in line with current market standards and will be commensurate with the candidate's qualifications, skills, and relevant experience.
